Although on the fringes of urban London Shepperton High Street is referred to as ‘The Village' and retains a village community feeling. Traders know many of their customers by name and all the local community groups pull together to keep this special environment.
WHAT LED TO SVCG?
In 2011, a regeneration of the High Street was completed: An initiative of the local borough council match-funded by Surrey County Council improved the village centre to make it more attractive, thereby encouraging local trade.
The design was agreed by a steering group of local people from local community groups, such as civic pride, church, rotary, business, residents' association, horticultural society and local councillors.
The final scheme concentrated on Renfree Corner, the village hall area and the central island/slip road, bringing these main achievements:-
1) REGENERATED RENFREE CORNER verge with a planted Dinghy, fedging and trees
2) IMPROVED PARKING AREAS
3) WORKS TO IMPROVE THE TREES and INCREASING THE 'GREEN CORRIDOR'
4) IMPROVE VILLAGE HALL FRONTAGE with new wall, railings and hedging and signage
5) RECYCLING moved from central road island and screened Pedestrian entrance
AND SVCG?
2011 the local authority stopped planting and watering the various flower beds in the shopping centre. Community members from this above intiative took over looking after these - our core all-year round activity.
The group realised School Lane opposite 3 Horseshoes was a mess. This was cleared, planted up as far as Burchetts Way and over the years developed into a new "pocket park", Lord's Bridge Garden. The opening ceremony in 2015 was a big village event attended by the Mayor and MP.
We have grown further from an ad hoc casual grouping into a properly formed local community organisation. School Lane verge, the dew pond in Halliford School grounds (Black Ditch Pond), a community allotment in Grove Road and, most recently, development of Shepperton Village Hall grounds are now our responsibility.
We regularly support local competitions - Spelthorne in Bloom, RHS's It's Your Neighbourhood and have a stall at the annual summer Village Fair and Christmas-time at Big Tree Night.
